Altona is a beautiful suburb in Melborne, Victoria in Australia. Only around 13 km from the Central Business District in Melbourne, Altona has a population of around 10,762 people (per the 2016 census).
Altona is a relatively large suburb with a low-density residential number in the southern-east half of the location. One main feature of this location is the Altona Beach, which is one of only 2 beaches available for swimming in the Western Suburbs region.
Altona also has four primary schools to choose from, including Altona Primary, Seaholme Primary, Altona College, and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. The secondary schools available include Mount St Joseph’s College for girls, and Altona College.
Another major feature of Altona is its library branch, which features the centre for environmental resources, which gives the community access to media concerning the environmental actions of Hobsons Bay.
The Altona Beach is also host to an annual event called the Altona Beach Festival, held at the Logan Reserve Precinct, which promote and celebrates the western suburbs, including Hobsons Bay. The event involves various activities, including a beach market, street parade, double-decker tour and professional entertainers. The festival was previously called the Bayside Festival or Operation Recreation.
Altona Beach’s festival had its 40th anniversary in 2017, and the location had a brief period of heightened attention in 2002 when it featured on the Postcards program on Channel 9. The festival is easy to access via suburban passenger trains and busses, just a few minutes from Altona Station. Scouts Australia is a huge feature of the parade. Scouts Australia also has two groups in Altona, and there are many sporting clubs available to join for Hockey, Cricket, Basketball, soccer, football and more. Altona is represented by the Altona Magic soccer team too.
The Altona City Theatre is a must-see location in the region, producing a pantomime and two major musicals per year. The pantomime often coincides with the Bayside Festival.
