Top Tips for Decluttering an Apartment

Did you know that too much clutter in your life can affect your mental health?

The more disorganised your apartment becomes, the more likely you are to feel overwhelmed. That’s why it’s so important to make some time for a regular de-cluttering strategy. Not only will a lack of clutter make your home seem cleaner, but it will also make you feel more efficient and productive too!

The secret to great decluttering? Always leave at least 10% of your rooms open and empty – ready for new things. Then when you bring something new into your home, use the “one item in, one item out” method to ensure that your space isn’t too crowded.

The more items you collect, the more time you’ll need to put aside for decluttering. In the meantime, here are some rules for 3 of your most important rooms.

Decluttering the Bathroom

A bathroom should be an oasis of relaxation and comfort – not a nightmare brimming with boxes, lotions, and potions. To make the most out of your bathroom:

  • Take everything out of your cabinets and drawers and organise them: There are bound to be a few pieces of expired makeup or some old products that you don’t mind getting rid of.
  • Use fewer, better products: Rather than trying to get the right cleansing experience by trying dozens of different soaps and toners, invest in one great product that you can use every day.
  • Make the most of hooks and drawers: Once you’ve got everything organised, do what you can to keep items off the floor. Hooks for robes and hand towels are great and remember that drawers are a fantastic addition to any bathroom.

Decluttering the Kitchen

Clutter in the kitchen is bad news for many reasons. First of all, too much clutter is bound to make you feel overwhelmed when you walk into your kitchen, which means you’re less likely to cook, and more likely to phone for a takeaway instead. At the same time, excess clutter in your kitchen can lead to poor hygiene and even safety hazards. Organise your kitchen by:

  • Removing counter clutter: Get rid of anything on your counters that you don’t use every day and remember that your kitchen counter isn’t the best place to keep your mail, magazines, or other household items without a home.
  • Check regularly for expired items: Go through your pantry on a regular basis to get rid of anything that’s out of date. This will help you to keep your kitchen organised, and it may stop you from wasting too much food too!
  • Update your storage: Give everything in your kitchen its own pre-designated space and make sure that your family members know to put things away after they’ve used them.

Decluttering the Bedroom

Finally, it can be difficult to relax at night when you’re surrounded by piles of clutter. Your bedroom should be a place where you can finally breathe a sigh of relief after a long, hard day. To ensure that your room is ready for slumber:

  • Clear up floor space and make sure that you have a laundry basket or hamper for any clothes you aren’t going to place straight into the washing machine.
  • Put items you’re not using away into drawers and cabinets so that they’re not taking up space and gathering dust. Simple and minimalist is best for your bedroom.
  • Always make the bed: In most bedrooms, the bed will take up the most space. Pulling back your covers and fluffing your pillows will help your room to look more organised almost instantly!
